An Overview Behind the Lawn Mower’s History

After seeing a bladed reel in a cloth mill, Edward Budding elaborated on it and invented the reel lawn mower during the early in 1830s. His patent stated that gentlemen might find using the machine to be a healthy, useful and amusing exercise. Gas powered lawn mowers first began to appear around 1890 and the riding lawnmower is now about 100 years old.

Cast iron was the major material used in the early reel mower and consisted of a large roller in the back and a roller in the front, which was more like a cutting cylinder. Power was transmitted by using gear wheels made of cast iron from the roller in the rear to a cutting reel. Overall, the machines of today are very similar to the original mowers of the 1830s.

Perhaps one of the smartest moves of the inventor was to allow others to build their own lawn mowers while still under his license, resulting in improvements and more revenue. Ransomes was one of the first companies to take advantage of that and started to produce their own versions.

The company is still very active in the lawn care environment and they have become the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial lawn mowers and lawn care equipment. When the original patents lapsed and with the increase in popularity of certain sports, such as cricket, lawn tennis, rugby and football, other companies were able to begin manufacturing their own products.

The motorized lawnmower engine began to appear around 1890, touted as a lightweight gas engine or as small steam-powered engines. For a number of years the steam-powered mowers were preferred, but by the 1900s the gas mowers were pulling ahead in popularity. The period after World War I saw more advanced technology and people were starting to move into suburban type housing, which increased the need for mowers and other lawn and garden tools.

Some people are not aware of the fact that these new modern ideas that included rotary cutting and electric power were actually first brought out during the 1920s and 1930s; however, they did not become popular until a much later date. Lawn mowers went through many innovations during that time and included improvements such as a smaller but more powerful lawnmower engine and lighter designs. The technological advancements continued to improve throughout the 50s, which resulted in mowers that were more reliable, yet less expensive. The rotary mower was produced by using lightweight plastic and lighter gas and electric motors, which is considered to be one of the major innovations.

Electric Garden Tools Or Petrol Garden Tools – Which Are Better For the Home Garden?

Many if not most home gardeners buy electric garden tools as opposed to gas-powered tools. Considering that you will hardly, if ever find a landscape professional or garden contractor using an electric lawn mower or strimmer, you might want to ask yourself if you should be following your neighbors or the professionals on this matter.

Obviously, price is the reason behind peoples’ decision, because there is no professional justification for choosing electric power tools over petrol ones. Over the whole range of garden power tools – from lawn mowers, strimmers, and hedge trimmers – quality petrol tools completely out-perform their electric-powered equivalents.

Moreover, they easily out-live electric tools. If a gas-powered lawn mower can serve a gardening contractor for about 4 years, working day in and day out, then it should last a home gardener a lifetime, if maintained properly. How many years on the other hand, do you think you will get out of your electric lawn mower?

It is fears about expensive care and maintenance that deter people from buying a gas-powered tool, but these are largely unfounded. For the average suburban garden, maintenance amounts to sending the tools to a small tools repair shop once a year, for a routine change of oil, spark plugs and filters e.t.c.

So although the initial outlay for petrol garden tools is 2-3 times that of electric ones, in the long run, it makes more economic sense to buy gas-powered tools. Again, why not copy the professionals who are always looking at their bottom line.

There are some circumstances however, where the lower cost of an electric tool may justify its purchase. For example, if you use a hedge trimmer for 5-6 working hours a year, then an expensive petrol tool is probably unnecessary. Likewise, for special tasks like mechanical scarifying, which are carried out once a year or less, an electric tool can be hired from a garden center at low cost.

Which type of power tool is safer for the home gardener? In principle, gas tools by being more powerful can cause more damage. A gas-powered strimmer for instance, is a very dangerous tool in the wrong hands, although one should not overlook the possibility of electrocution with electric tools. In both cases, there is of course no substitute for following safety measures to the letter, and acting with responsibility and common sense.

Tips on Buying a Lawn Mower

If you are planning to purchase a new lawn mower, there are a few things you need to consider before you actually get a device. Today, the market is lined with an assortment of lawn mowers that would leave you captivated when you visit any of the showrooms offering them on sale. But, before you go ahead and make a purchase, sit down and finalize on what is available in the market, what your requirement is, what exactly you desire and what precisely suits your needs. If possible, try to get some hold on the lawn mower jargon too, you will find it handy.

You have the option to select between a rotary and a reel mower available in gasoline as well as electric models. While the reel lawn mowers slash with revolving blades moving over a stationery blade, rotary mowers graze with a blade moving in a circular manner below a strong metal or fiberglass covering. It is, however, advisable to purchase a manual reel mower if your lawn area is 100 sq meter or less.

Nonetheless, if you desire to purchase a power mower, you may choose from the reel and rotary varieties. While the reel mowers really trim the grass shorter and makes your lawn appear tidy and chic, the rotary models usually cost less and are somewhat easier to manage as well as whet. You may also decide between buying a gas and electric-powered mowers. The gas mowers usually create a lot of noise and pollute the atmosphere. However, while deciding in favor of the electric models, check if the wire lengths suit your lawn area and if they are cordless, remember to check the battery power.

There are more options for you while purchasing a land mower – push and self-propelled types. Basically, the self-propelled types, where motors turn wheels, are useful on gradients and very large lawns. Alternatively, you may also get a lawn tractor. There is also a choice to purchase a mulching mower as it will save you from keeping bagful of grass clippings, as this model cuts the grass too finely and blows it back into the lawn to serve as organic fertilizer.

In addition, consider other aspects like whether the mower you are purchasing has enough maneuverability, if it is easy to operate whether it is too heavy for you.

Here’s the Difference Between LPG and Natural Gas!

Within Australia and around the world, Natural & LP Gas is supplied to homes, business and industry. Although they both perform similar tasks they have different chemical properties.

Natural Gas

Natural gas is an odourless and colourless fossil fuel consisting mainly of methane that has been formed over hundred of millions of years from plankton and decomposing vegetable matter that were buried by sediment over the period of time.

Natural gas is distributed to homes and businesses through a network of underground pipes. It is used for residential, commercial and industrial purposes as well as in the transportation industry. It is safe, efficient and reliable.

LPG

LP or liquefied petroleum gas has a different chemical composition to natural gas and consists mainly of butane and or propane. It is produced during the oil refining process or is extracted during the natural gas production process. LP gas is stored under modest pressures in liquid form.

This makes it safe for transportation and for storing in a concentrated form. For homes and businesses that are not connected to the natural gas supply, LP gas is a cost effective energy source because it is easy to transport and store.

The History of Tractors Part One

Steam powered tractor

Gazing at the expanse of fields, the American farmers hope to develop some direct traction equipment, they invented the three wheels of farm machinery, that is a machine with two big wheel at behind and a big boilers, and a small front wheel for direction control. In 1829, the CASE company succeeded in the trial of this type of tractors, just within 3 years, all the great American West started using this farm machine.

Steam powered cultivator

In 1860, British Lieutenant Halkett developed a steam-powered cultivator. It has two pairs of orbital distance of 18 meters, were located on both sides of the tractor. And the cultivator just hung suspended between the bridge across the track, this device has two steam engines, which were installed in each of the track. And good thing is all other farm machinery can be installed in such a cultivator, it can be used for cultivated land, harrow, Shall, sowing and harvesting, but also vegetables and water. Although Halkett the inventor is more ambitious than others, such machine is so costly, so he did not achieve the expected success in the end.

Berg tractor

People have been trying to install diesel engines in the steam engine chassis. In 1889, Berg is first American to achieve this aspiration. He invented the steam engine chassis which is very similar with normal tractor chassis, and finished the first successful trial by Charter Gas Machinery Company. In 1892, Iowa John M ยท Frolich in Cincinnati built a farm tractor as the internal combustion engine for the Fan Duzi gas and petrol machinery company, this is the first truly practical internal combustion tractor which is also the predecessor of John Deere tractor.

Avril tractor

In 1901, the Americans invented the three tractor. But the front wheels are too light, it often overturned due to overload. Although it has such shortcomings, it still achieved some success. In 1904, the United States Shapusipa Teng Otto mowers and tractors produced a mini tractor, this tractor also equipped with cutting arm, used to mow.

Hart and the Pan-type tractor

Just like the Germans Froehlich, the American Hart and Pan in 1902 developed a severe functional four-wheel-type tractor. In 1905, the United States created the first tractor manufacturer professional associations. Ministry of Commerce of local leadership Williams decided to adopt this type of gasoline drived tractor. So far, we can still see some advertising pictures of that type.

Gougis tractor

1906 French Emir. Gougis made the first such tractors, the tractor can be launched as an independent packaging machine power unit.

Ford Tractor

Henry Ford is the son of an American farmer, even before his touring car start mass production, he had already started making tractors. In 1907, his first type of tractor adopted the design of rear wheel gathering packaging type, and its axis and the front of the control mechanism is adopted K-Ford type.

Wolseley Club 1913

In the history of the development of tractors, 1913, marked the beginning of an important historical period. Since then, the tractor changed to smaller, lighter and faster. Such as Boolean type tractors is the original of this new type of tractor, which is first made in the Minneapolis, Minnesota of American. The first type Boolean tractor called “Wolseley Club”, People also call this tractor as the non-frame (that is, removed the heavy steam engine frame) tractor. However, this tractor has some fault, its steel shell and the engine drive shaft U-shaped device to launch the back of high uplift to much.
